Family benefits in Ireland

When you became a legal resident in Ireland and obtained your personal service number social security number (Personal Public Service Number) any citizen can benefit from the following payments from part of the Social Department.


Child benefit

Child benefit is a sum of money, currently 140 euros/month that is paid

for each child up to the age of 18 who follows a form of education. The condition is that at least one of the parents must be employed and it can also be granted for children who live in other European countries if the parent works in Ireland.


The aid for working parents

The aid for working parents (Working family payment) is a payment non-taxable weekly for parents with low incomes and who have at least one dependent child. The amount granted depends on the number of children in the family and the income of the employed parent must work at least 38 hours in a 2-week interval. It should be mentioned that the payment is granted only for persons with an employment contract (not for natural persons authorized as self-employed) and qualified family members up to 22 years old who are in some form of education.

The maternity benefit

The maternity benefit is a payment for people who are in maternity leave and is granted based on the period of time worked in Ireland before the birth the child. As a rule, to benefit from this payment, you must work for at least 39 weeks

before birth if employed or at least 52 weeks if you are an authorized natural person. The amount granted for the year 2023 is 262 euros/week and is paid for a period of 26 weeks.


The paternity benefit

The paternity benefit is the paid leave that the father can benefit from the first 6 months after the birth of the child. The period granted is 2 consecutive weeks and the amount received from the Social Department is 262 euros/week. Parent's benefit is a weekly payment in the amount of 262 euro/week introduced in July 2022 and is granted to parents employed for a period of maximum 7 weeks in the first 2 years of the child's life.


The benefit for single parents

The benefit for single parents (One parent family payment) is the social payment granted single parents who care for at least one minor under the age of 7 and depends on the income obtained by the applicant. The parent making the request must be separated from the other parent for at least 3 months and not receive an appropriate amount of maintenance from him. Of also, in order to receive the payment, the applicant must not be in a cohabiting relationship with another the person.


Back to School Clothing and Footware Allowance

This is a payment that families with low incomes can benefit from and it is granted for each elderly child from up to 22 years old who follow a form of education. Requests for this help can be made in every year between June and September and are currently in the amount of 260 euros for each child

between 4 and 11 years and 385 euros for children between 12 and 22 years.
